Generational differences in response to desiccation stress in the desert moss Tortula inermis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Active growth in post-embryonic sporophytes of desert mosses is restricted to the cooler, wetter months. However, most desert mosses have perennial gametophytes. It is hypothesized that these life history patterns are due, in part, to a reduced desiccation tolerance for sporophytes relative to gametophytes. METHODS Gametophytes with attached post-embryonic sporophytes of T...

Membrane Organization of the Desiccation-Tolerant Moss Tortula ruralis in Dehydrated States.

Membrane organization of the desiccation tolerant moss Tortula ruralis was studied in several intensely dehydrated states (75% relative humidity [RH], 90% RH, plasmolysis in molar salt, freezing to -20 degrees C) by (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance and ultrastructural analyses. Both methods revealed that even at 75% RH (-400 bars), the moss cellular membranes retained extended phospholipid bila...

Polyribosomes Conserved during Desiccation of the Moss Tortula ruralis Are Active.

During desiccation of the moss Tortula ruralis (Hedw.) (Gaertn, Meyer and Scherb) polyribosomes are conserved. On rehydration, protein synthesis is rapidly resumed. In the presence of protein synthesis initiation inhibitors ribosome run-off from the conserved polyribosomes takes place, confirming that these retain their activity as intact structures during desiccation.

Microbial community response to hydration-desiccation cycles in desert soil

Life in desert soil is marked by episodic pulses of water and nutrients followed by long periods of drought. While the desert flora and fauna flourish after rainfall the response of soil microorganisms remains unclear and understudied. We provide the first systematic study of the role of soil aqueous habitat dynamics in shaping microbial community composition and diversity. Detailed monitoring ...

Characterization of reference genes for RT-qPCR in the desert moss Syntrichia caninervis in response to abiotic stress and desiccation/rehydration

Syntrichia caninervis is the dominant bryophyte of the biological soil crusts found in the Gurbantunggut desert. The extreme desert environment is characterized by prolonged drought, temperature extremes, high radiation and frequent cycles of hydration and dehydration. S. caninervis is an ideal organism for the identification and characterization of genes related to abiotic stress tolerance. Re...
